Cretaceous China is a book project aiming to inspire young readers in bilingual households to read and learn in their home language. In the United States’ English-dominant culture, heritage language learners face challenges in maintaining and improving their language skills. Many children lose interest and motivation in learning the language before adolescence. These books, written in English and Mandarin Chinese, center on dinosaurs from northeastern China’s Yixian Formation, a geological formation home to the first feathered non-avian dinosaur fossils. By covering a topic that is both fun as well as relevant to the language at hand, the book engages readers and encourages them in their language acquisition. It is also valuable to older language learners as they build their proficiency, and the series can be expanded to incorporate additional languages and topics.
